My favorite piece of advice is to turn around once and a while and see what it will look like on the way back. (also helps to remember that you did NOT walk by a bunch of lakes and another set of mountains on the way IN)
Rather than encouraging new names, perhaps it would be better to encourage a common designation -- John Muir Trail/Whitney trail junction --: 1. shows up on the map 2. commonly used in venues outside of this board.
We have this problem of "regional terms" in the Horticulture business, so the professionals stick with the original Latin terms; from California to Italy, everyone is on the same page.
