Bob, I just re-read a section of your trip report and asked for times on the hike.
First leg: North to South: 9:03
Second leg: South to North: 10:31
Husband and I are both 50 years old and hike every weekend of the year, weather permitting.
You also asked for suggestion, and these are just my .05 cents:
1. Start far earlier, don't take the shuttle. Start by 4:00 am at the LATEST. I realize you didn't take the shuttle, this advice is for anyone else. :)
2. Don't drink Gatorade, use Cytomax for Canyon hiking. Vast difference in electroyltes and recovery periods between Gatorade and Cytomax.
3. Take more frequent, but far shorter breaks. On the first leg, I will take my first break at Cottonwood campground, to fill up on water and eat. 8 minute break there. Second break will be Phantom Ranch to replenish water and rest. 15 mins. there, final break is Indian Gardens for another 12-15 minutes. I will take sitting, pack-on breaks when finishiing the corkscrew or at the Three Miles house.
4. Always bring high sodium snack foods. I've seen people cramp in the Canyon and it's dangerous and agonizing.
