I have a one-day permit for June 22nd. I have been up the MR once before but would like to find someone with more experience who would like to, in exchange for a free use of my permit, lead us up in the dark to Iceberg Lake. I and a friend are planning to come down the normal route, more than likely. Our budget doesn't allow us to offer payment for the "guiding service," but if there is someone out there familiar enough with the route that they could guide us for the love of the mountain and the use of my permit, it would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Michael

Welcome to WhitneyZone, Michael. How many slots are on your permit reservation? For you and a friend, you need two. For a third person, your permit must be for three people. How many does your permit say?

Unless you are a slow hiker, it is possible to ascend the MR in 6 hours, especially with a day pack.

If you really study the Mountaineers Route information, you should be able to do it on your own, starting up the Main Trail just before first light, and then starting up the North Fork as dawn breaks. If you have memorized the route, you would have plenty of time to make it down the main trail before dark. Here's the MR info: Mountaineer's Route info links within

Edit: Mike replied that he has 4 slots on the permit.

This will be my third time up the MR tomorrow. First time doing it in winter though. I am not sure you can say Im a professional by any means, but I agree with Steve that with a little research, you should be fine without a guide. I live in Orange County and would be open to the idea of doing a day trip thurs June 21st if I could hitch a ride (says your from Utah, Orange county is southern coastal Ca.)

Here to help with any questions either way. Best of luck!
