There are a number of lessons to be learned.


The simple algorithm:

1) Members never get ahead of the Leader, or behind the designated Sweep.

2) Leader knows the terrain and is willing to backtrack in case of uncertainty. Short-range radio between leader & sweep is massively helpful.

3) Stop & get group together at all trail junctions.

Adherence to this simple set of rules will result in the entire group arriving successfully at the planned exit - or at least S&R finding all members in the same place.

There is an exception: If a member is broken, then the leader is responsible for sending the best choice on the chopper-run.
