moheel, sorry you missed out this year. Unfortunately, there is no way people can transfer their permits to someone else. Only the person named as leader or alternate may pick up the permits at the Visitor Center in Lone Pine.

I see you are from Idaho. There ARE definite possibilities to get cancellations and no-show permits. First of all, cancellations will pop up on Recreation.gov throughout the season. (I am not sure, but they may be made available every day at 7 AM Pacific time, ...or randomly through the day -- we will see.)

They manage the many no-shows pretty well, too, with a process to draw lots each day at the Visitor Center at 11 AM. The regulars who use this process are seldom disappointed.

If you were willing to come down and spend a day or two acclimating and trying for those no-shows and last-minute cancellations, I am sure you would get your permits.

And finally, check out the Unused Whitney Permits pages to get an idea of the abundance of permits at different times. Be aware that these numbers reflect the unused permits AFTER all the no-shows and cancellations have been given out to people asking for them.
