Blah! You should take your whole family and go tromp around the Sierra for 3 months. It can be done!
I probably spent 5 to 6 thousand dollars on this trip but that is because I went over board. I bought around 2000 dollars of new gear and then spent over 2500 dollars while out on the trail. Although this coming year I have spent around another 2000 dollars on gear I am trying to scale back on my trail spending. I am going to try and do many sections of two weeks without resupply to stay away from pricey resorts and I plan to send almost all my food ahead.
Yosemite to Whitney is great no matter what route you take.
