Successful summit of Mt. Tom. Camped at Horton Lake Friday then summited via the SW ridge yesterday. The climb up the ridge was sublime, with some fun class 3 on and off the last 500 feet. Spectacular summit views as expected. We descended down one of the main chutes off the summit, and that unfortunately was a bit of a miserable mess of choss and medium sized rock. Was not the scree ski we were hoping for. Earlier in the spring would definitely be the ideal time to summit, with a clean climb up the SW ridge then descendign the chute filled with snow.
No snow at all on the trial up to Horton, on the mining road switchbacks, or on the SW side of the mountain (except for the very bottom of the main chute, (but that will probably not be in anyone's route). No bugs at all at Horton Lake, though there were a few mosquitos on the way down by the bridge crossing before heading down below to the approach trail.
