At other Inyo trailheads I have slept in my car at the trail head the night before a hike. I am not sure that is technically allowed, but it has never been an issue. Does anyone have experience at the Whitney trailhead? I am wondering if they are more strict because of how popular it is.

I don't think anybody will bother you. There are also walk-in camp sites just below the parking area that usually have spots available. You can only camp there one night.

Thanks, I didn't know about the walk in camp sites. I think I rather do the car thing for free, but a $18 walk in site can be my backup plan.
