Hello all, I’m new to online chatting so forgive me for my lack of “forum” savvy. My son and I obtained an overnight Mt Whitney trail permit with camping at consultation lake. The permit has exit location at Baker and Green lakes (exit only)- JM 22. Can anyone please clarify if this is this a through hike pass? Can we enter and exit at the Mt Whitney Portal in Lone Pine. I’ve been unsuccessfully trying to contact the ranger station for weeks. Look forward to responses, and check Mt. Whitney off my bucket list. Thanks in advance.

I hope others will weigh in, but based on my experience the Inyo permit system (which you appear to be referencing) has two kinds of permits. You get either an overnight permit that allows a Whitney Portal exit or an overnight permit allows exit anywhere else.

The locations on the permit are for entry location. Looking at Recreation.gov, JM22 is for entry at the Baker and Green Lakes trailhead. I think that is up near Big Pine. I don’t know that trailhead, but while I expect there is a way to use it to ultimately access the JMT and then head south to exit at Mt Whitney (assuming you have the Whitney exit version of the permit), that would be a long, multi day trip for sure.

Again, hopefully some experts will weigh in, but I don’t think JM22 is a Mount Whitney permit unless for a long backpacking trip that could potentially exit there.

Not sure if this is the right answer, but if your reservation says "Entry Point: Mt. Whitney Trail (Overnight)" then you should be able to pull up the reservation on recreation.gov, click "Modify", then select "Mt. Whitney Trail - JM35" from the drop down menu under "Exit Point". "Baker and Green Lakes (Exit Only) - JM22" is the first option on the (alphabetial) drop down menu so perhaps that was the default when you made the reservation? If someone has better info please chime in! Good luck and have fun!
