Just back from the Portal. There was a truck parked at the second gate.

Yesterday, the Highway Patrol was taking pictures and checking the truck out.

What made the truck's location interesting is that it was parked prior to the gate (must have been closed when he left the truck there for a hike).

This morning, Inyo Sheriff showed up at the gate prior to the overflow lot. Yes, that is where the road stops. They haven't opened the road any further.

On my way down the hill, 4 or 5 white trucks (Inyokern SAR) and vans were heading up the road.

Met a guy on Sunday who just finished the MR (day hike). Nothing said other than a hard hike.

I am not sure this is the same person.

The gate was open several days ago.

Looks like the missing hiker passed away as a result of a slip and fall on a steep chute:

It says that he was found south of the trail at 11,600'. Looking on the topo it must have been on the steep downslope from the trail toward Consultation lake, but I am a not sure if this is where he fell. My recollection from climbing up in spring conditions is that there tends to be a well trodden path in the snow leading to the chute so perhaps he went off course but it's not clear to me what happened.

INYO COUNTY, CA, APRIL 21, 2021 – On Thursday April 15, Saulo Sifuentes Escalante, a 36 year old man from Conroe, TX, arrived at Whitney Portal with intentions of hiking Mt Whitney as a day climb. The Inyo County Sheriff’s Office received notification on Sunday April 18 that he was overdue.

Inyo County Search and Rescue responded and searched the area unsuccessfully Monday April 19 with the assistance of CHP Inland Air Operations helicopter H80. On April 20, twelve Search and Rescue members were inserted by an Army Chinook helicopter, with teams distributed from the summit down to Mirror Lake. Kings Canyon National Park was also involved, since the search area included the west side of Mt Whitney, which is in the Park.

At approximately 11am on April 20 Kings Canyon officials notified Inyo County Sheriff Office that they had obtained a search warrant to review cell phone data records and that had revealed a potential location for the subject. A Chinook helicopter was dispatched to investigate the location and was able to locate the subject deceased south of the main Whitney trail at approximately 11,600’ elevation in a steep, snowy, north facing chute. The subject had apparently been ascending this chute when he slipped and fell.

The Chinook was able to move a team of rescuers to a landing zone 1,200’ below the site. Rescuers were able to access the site via a steep snow climb, and were able to assist in the recovery of Mr. Escalante late in the afternoon, by using a hoist into the Chinook.

Assisting agencies include: Inyo Search and Rescue, Inyo Sheriff, China Lake Mountain Rescue Group, and Kings Canyon National Park. Aerial assistance was provided by CHP, China Lake Naval Weapons Station, and Army National Guard.

Anyone want to guess where he might have been found?

Somewhere with cell phone pings, at 11,600 elevation, north-facing chute, south of the Main Mt Whitney trail. That elevation is below Consultation Lake. Rescue team was dropped in at 10,400 -- looks like Outpost Camp/Bighorn Park.

Was he attempting to climb Candlelight Peak from the Outpost Camp???
