Hey all, thanks for the wealth of information you folks have posted on whitneyzone. I'm going solo next week (my hiking buddy can't go then) if the weather is ok. I'll stay on the main trail.

Anybody have experience using an Ursack at Trail Camp? I've never been to Mt Whitney but was planning on spending at least one night at TC before summiting. I really do not want to carry a garcia if I can avoid it.

I carried my full pack (~26#) to the summit of White Mountain a few weeks ago to train for Whitney. But of course I want to leave my tent, sleeping bag, stove etc. at TC while I go to the summit with a light load of the 10 essentials. Is it ok to leave stuff at there for the day hike? What about bears, marmots & smaller critters? Also, what time should I leave TC for the summit?

Also, being solo, will there be plenty of other hikers on the trail or is the regular season over? Seems the number of posts has dropped off significantly compared with earlier this summer. Of course I will have gaia GPS on my phone, the Tom Harrison map, compass, and an InReach, but even so I'm not excited about being the only one up there. Hope there will be other hikers.

Where do you park if you have an overnight permit? Or do I have to take a shuttle?

Appreciate any guidance you can offer, thanks!

I always day hiked Whitney, but I can answer a few of your questions. Backpackers routinely leave tents and heavy packs at Trail Camp and summit with day packs. Bears at TC are quite rare. I think there was one report many years ago. However, marmots will chew through tents and packs to get at any food stuffs. I think some people leave tents and packs open so the marmot can sniff around without chewing holes. The posts may be slow, but not the trail. You will have plenty of company during daylight hours and overnight at TC. We always left the Portal at midnight around Labor Day. Even then, there would be the occasional headlamp coming up behind us or stragglers coming down. Both Outpost and Trail Camps had plenty of tents. If you intend to break camp and hike out the same day you summit, then leave for the summit at first light.

Hi Mike,
Congratz on your first Whitney attempt & hopefully summit...
I'll try to address some of your concerns without going over my character allotment.....
I'm not sure if Ursacks are even allowed in 'active bear areas'. There is a bear vault that is smaller & lighter in weight than the Garcia. Bear canisters are required & can be rented at the Portal Store, the Interagency Vistor Center where you pick up your permit, or from the store Elevation in Lone Pine......
Bears can be active in the Portal area. But on the trail it's the marmots/chipmunks that will get into your unattended pack & tent that you need to be aware of......
Ha ha but I have to tell you, we were camped in the Portal campground last week, inadvertently left the bear box open overnite, & were shocked that nothing had ransacked it....
Yes people all the time leave their setup at Trail Camp while they are on the trail. Not an issue. But I have seen where folks will collapse their tent, or otherwise leave it open so the critters don't chew a hole in it to check things out......
Leaving TC for the summit, I would leave as soon as possible in the morning. As a first-timer you will want to 'savor the experience' as it were, so it will take you longer to summit because your are pausing to, 1. breathe, 2. take photos, 3. just experience the journey. The first time is just so overwhelming....
Actually, to me, every time I go up is overwhelming. & different. So sometimes I like to stop & just take everything in......
As for being 'solo'...You are never solo. Except maybe in the dead of winter. There are so many people on the trail.
As for parking, there is a campground at the Portal. You don't need reservations if you get there early enough in the day you can get a site. There is a walk-in 'hiker' campground site. & some people spend the nite in the overflow parking area, altho that is not encouraged....
With the road construction & parking restrictions this year, there has been no issues getting a parking spot at or near the TH. You will be issued a parking permit with your overnight trail permit.....
Hope this helps. You can PM me if needed.....
Have fun!

Ursack IS allowed in the Whitney Zone. Here is the Inyo N.F. web page: Traveling in Bear Country

Quote:
Bear-resistant canisters and panniers are the most effective method of food storage for backpackers and stock-users. Bears cannot open any of these containers. In all areas of Inyo National Forest, bear-resistant panniers and canisters are strongly recommended for food storage. For more information about bears, bear-resistant containers and how to pack them, visit sierrawild.gov .

In the following areas use of bear resistant containers is mandatory:
...Mount Whitney (map)...

Ah that's great news. Added bonus: learning the word "pannier" - thanks Steve C!

Thanks CatB for the info, I appreciate your help!

On the leaving the bear box open, that's kind of funny - we have an annual large group campout in SEKI where a bear shows up at least every other year, even with everything locked up. I saw on youtube a video of a guy at the Portal campground who found a bear who wouldn't leave. Turns out her two cubs were up a tree over his campsite. smile

@RichardK:

Thanks for the info, when you've started at Portal, what were the temps like in the middle of the night?

I have an Ursack and used it at Trail Camp earlier this month. As an added precaution from critters, I built a small rock "vault" using the plentiful loose rocks that are scattered over the area. I put the sack in the vault and covered the top. No evidence of any disturbance overnight or when we were on the summit. The critters here are conditioned to people and are very bold.

I also built a separate small rock vault (aka "the impenetrable fortress of poo") to keep my wag bag. Didn't want to have to deal with a possible cleanup if a critter messed with it.

FYI - It took us 3.5 hours to summit from TC.

That's brilliant! I'll definitely do that. (And take it apart when I depart, of course.)

Congrats on summiting! Thanks Sauce Castillo!

We have 5 summit hikes and 1 attempt. Temps are all over the place. Some trips were shorts and T shirts at midnight. On others hikes, small puddles of water were frozen solid. Carry multiple layers so you are ready for anything. One of the trailhead boards has summit pictures taken two hours apart. One is clear and sunny. The other is a white out blizzard.

Mike2016, How did your hike go? My group is a first time group also and will be going next week, September 7-9. Any tips on do's and don'ts?
