Hi Folks - I'm planning to attempt a summit of Mt. Langley in mid-October. I'm interested to hear thoughts based on experience regarding using New Army vs. Old Army pass. I'm currently looking at day hike out of the Cottonwood Lakes trailhead. Thanks! Shane
I would highly recommend Old Army Pass. Currently is snow free, and shaves off 600' of elevation gain from the New Army Pass route. I did Mount Lnagley in August as a dayhike from Cottonwood via Old Army Pass. The trail up the pass is a bit rough, but its nothing unmanageable.

I would take Old Army. It's is shorter and has better views IMO. I've been up New Army twice and each time I kept thinking, "Why didn't I take Old Army"?
Thanks for the recent report. I enjoy your posts, in general. What are your thoughts on this as a day hike? I did Whitney as a successful day hike last July, but had A LOT more daylight to work with.
WE did Langley a few weeks ago. My wife doesn't like descending rocky trails. So, we went Up, Old Army Pass, and then descended on the New Army Pass. A happy medium.
