...Hmmmm.... Interesting. The guy's got a hat and gaiters like mine, maybe I should try his pack.

I remember seeing something like this that came out several years ago. Can't remember the name.

Sometimes, particularly in cold weather hiking, like in the NE, I use something conceptually similar - a conventional daypack, and attach a Dana Wet-rib on one strap. I don't even know if Dana makes them anymore, but ... they're extremely handy for carrying snacks, liner gloves, etc in very cold weather.

Hasn't the military been using this idea for a long time? As I recall, during Desert Storm I saw a lot of ground troops geared up with configured front and back packs.

And Steve, I'm sure you meant "gaiters". I know you wouldn't talk "gators" with a bulldog in the house . . .

So... Gaiters are made for wading through slushy stuff (like a swamp) and keeping it out of your shoes/boots. Somehow I thought their name originated from Alligator. So why are they spelled "gaiter"? Maybe my assumption is completely wrong.

I Googled "gaiter" and got a bunch of Franco-German gobbledygook. The origin of the word is less than certain, it appears.

Now, if you'd like me to define and expand on "Gator", pack a lunch. In Georgia, the term "alligator" is commonly used in order to delineate our indiginous version of the reptile from the blue-and-orange species commonly found in our neighboring state to the south - that particular branch of the alligator family being commonly discussed while using much colorful and profane language, and accompanied by regular expectoration . . .

Yes, the front pack served as a "counter-balance." However, when it comes to "hitting the deck," they tend to be "in the way" to some extent. My hat, er, I mean, cover (Marines call them covers...hats are for the aristrocrats), is off to those companies who come up with these "ideas" for our military. Not all get the bid, but some of them do.

Blue and orange? Interesting color combination for such a reptilian. Doesn't stand a chance for survival in the "wild" when up against a "Bulldog!"

If "gait" is manner of walking, then "gaiter" is a manner of walkering!

Speaking of gaiters: I would like to purchase a set of gaiters both blue and orange just to see Bulldog34's reaction. I'm in the crosshairs now!

I already know how that feels since I rock a massive camera pack on my chest lol made me think about the concept of having pack space in the front.
