Who went up most recently? Headed up Whitney Sunday. Just wondering how cold we're actually talking between a 2am start and the summit? 30? 50?

I always run very hot so I don't want to pack base layers I'll never put on... Or my hardcore jacket. Recommendations? Could I get away with my Columbia shell without the parka insert?

The Mt Whitney Weather page (link to the left) has a line, "Cottonwood Lakes, elev. 10150' 7-day Temperatures".

If you check that one, or this 28-day link, you can get a pretty good idea of what to expect at the 10,000' elevation: Lows ranged from 26 to 40 F.

Checking NOAA and other sites, it appears the lows will be around 35 even at the summit this weekend.

It is not the temp alone but wind that makes the big difference. That wind shell, top and bottom, is the life saver. An easy day with 35 F is altogether different with a 50 mph wind, wet, injured, or hunkered down. These things can happen even on a dayhike. Have I ever skimped? Yes, but all of us taken unnecessary chances at times, all to save a few lbs that really does not matter in the long run. When faced with a choice, play it safe

I believe there has been one death this year due to hypothermia. Weather can be fickle. Harvey's advice is very good. A "puff" jacket or vest weighs less than 8 oz, and packs very small. Very inexpensive insurance (IMO).
