Was back at Mammoth Lakes last week and went back to Minaret Lake. Last trip I went directly from Devil’s Post Pile to Minaret Lake via the Minaret Lake/creek trail, and then went cross country toward the Minaret Mines and back to the regular trail. This trip, I reversed the direction, taking the fork toward the Minaret Mines before cutting cross country to get back to Minaret Lake. I’m sure there is a better route than I have found so far, so may try again next trip.

As you can tell I really like this area. Much of the trail is tree shaded, and a good bit (25%?) of the trail is sand covered in leaves and pine needles. Like walking on carpet.

The route toward the Minaret Mines is very obscure, and easy to loose. My track can be found here:

You can see I went off trail a few times. I also cut over toward Minaret Lake too soon, so next trip will go all the way to the Mines and then come back watching for a better way over to the Lake.

I also want to get up to Cecile Lake, and provided I do not spend too much time finding my way over to Minaret Lake will climb up to Cecile Lake. My guess is that the climb will take ~ 1 hour, and then something less to return. This will make a very long day of it, likely 20 miles.

Nice photos John. I know I've asked before, but have forgotten the answer. What camera are you using?

63Chevyll,

Thanks for your compliment. I'm using a Sony A7R. Most of my pictures are taken using a Sony/Zeiss 35mm. I have taken a few with a 50mm, and a few with a 24 - 70 mm zoom (both also Sony/Zeiss). I just sold the zoom and will replace it with the new Zeiss Batis 25mm. More pics at:

Love the camera. With the 35mm lens it is not much bigger than point and shoot. As with most things, the second version is better. The new A7rII adds higher resolution, and in camera stabilization. Both nice features, but for me I'm happy with what I have.

John

Nice trip, John!

If you made it to Cecile Lake, it seems like it might be fun to continue on down to Shadow Lake, and exit at Agnew Meadows. Seems like it would be a sweet loop hike.

How long did the hike take?

Hey Steve,

Yes, I agree it would be a sweet loop. Going to Agnew Meadows would be the way to go provided the shuttle was running. That would save 4 miles at the end of a long day. Otherwise it would be a bit shorter to turn right at Shadow Lake, and take the JMT back to Devil's Post Pile.

I have been to Minaret Lake twice. The first time I went directly to the Lake, and it took ~ 4 hours (only to east side of the lake - add 1/2 hour to north west side). The second trip I hiked via the Minaret Mines route, and it added 1.5 hours and ~2.5 miles. So, taking the most direct route I think Ediza could be done in ~ 7+ hours. Then 7 miles and ~4 hours back to Agnew Meadows would get you to a total ~18 or 19 miles, and ~ 11 or 12 hours (provided you could catch the shuttle. Otherwise, could be another 2 miles via JMT and another hour. Ouch.

These are not "fastest" times, but include stops for lunch, stops to chat with other hikers, stops for Photos, etc... This hike from Devil's Post Pile seems to be the alternative JMT for many hikers. I've met several hikers doing the JMT going via Minaret Lake, Cecile Lake, Lake Ediza, and then back to the JMT at Shadow Lake. There is great camping at both Minaret Land and Lake Ediza, so I can see the charm. I'm told the JMT between Devil's Post Pile and Shadow Lake is dusty and without shade, but I've not done it.

Hmmm... I did that JMT section southbound in a fast morning, and it didn't seem all that dry or dusty. I recall it as being a pleasant jaunt through the forest. There's a pretty strong climb out of Shadow, but that is the toughest part.

Well, I'm sure your info is better than mine. What path would you take if the shuttle were not running (I think it stops after Labor day)?

I think without the shuttle, you either try to hitch hike, or return via the same trail you came in on.
