Hi!

Is anyone here looking for a partner to summit Whitney on a day hike (on Mt. Whitney Trail)?

I was on an overnight group trip July 13-14, but we did not get to summit (made it to Trail Camp) frown

I'm hoping to make another attempt before summer is over, but would rather not hike alone. I don't have a permit reserved for any dates right now, but I was hoping to get a walk-in or reserve canceled permits online.

A little about me: I'm a 27 year old female, grad student at Cal Poly SLO (originally from San Diego). I'm a runner, but getting more into hiking and backpacking. I ran a half marathon in May, but haven't done any consistent training since. I still run occasionally (3-4 times a week), and go on weekend hikes (~ 4-6 miles).

If interested, please let me know and maybe we can coordinate a day trip!

Tips and advice for solo hikers would be greatly appreciated as well!

Thank you! smile

Hi May,

I'm planning a solo hike and I'd be willing to compare notes to see if we are compatible. If interested, send me an email at jobaxter at sdsm dot com and we'll talk further.

Thanks,

Jo

I have four day use permits for Saturday 9/20 and I have a couple of friends who are likely not going to be able to join because of work commitments.

We attempted to summit on July 20 and were turned around by thunderstorms at Trail Camp. So it's time to try again. I'll be coming from LA and will likely will plan to camp at Whitney Portal and then start hiking around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday morning.

Shoot me a message if you are interested in joining.

Kyle

Hi,

I am interested in climbing Whitney as well, but don't have a group/permit to summit. Looking to find a few people to climb together, possibly during the first weekend in October. I am in LA.

Let me know if you are looking for one more. I'm a professional accountant, early thirties and fairly fit.

Thanks,

Miles

I am heading (driving) up to Lone Pine InterAgency Visitors Center this evening and at this point, I am only 160 miles away. I would like to hike with someone. Friday is the day I want to hike. I will leave at 4 am sharp. I need that much time. I am not too fast. I have only hiked the mountain once before. It was really rough for me. Lots of stops and starts. I did make it to the summit last year at 3:30 pm on October 3rd. The funny thing is that there were very few or actually no government workers or administrators of any kind on the mountain or at the visitor center during those days, only a few freaked rangers and a few angry maintenance workers at the portal to do the trash and put up signs telling people that the mountain was not staffed and people must leave. Hikers were not complying, they wad come to far, to be turned back, me as well, We disobeyed the pigs, at least those of us who felt experienced, confident, and those who were determined to hike it and hike it safely. It was difficult but I made it to the top. I left the portal at 6:30 pm October 2nd. I actually slept a little at the waterfalls on the way up and on the way back, I has ski pants, a tarp and a blanket, so sleeping was minimally possible given the weather. My solo success lasted less than 2 days, a total of 42 hours from leaving Whitney Portal, to returning to Whitney Portal. I would like to do it again. I will park at the Lone Pine Interagency Visitor Center tonight and wait till the morning, to see if I can get lucky, and receive a day pass. If I receive one, I will promptly drive up and make prepartations, possibly take a 4 hour nap up at 8 thousand feet, to acclimate. I am 50 and Native American. I have been climbing mountains nonstop for about 5 years now. If anyone sees this and is also seeking a partner, please contact me immediately at 415-828-3335 Zak Flying Around.

Good luck, Zak. I am sure you will get a walk-in permit.
