I just cancelled a reservation for a single day-use permit for July 20, so it'll probably be showing up as available at recreation.gov shortly. I hope this helps somebody!

I was a little surprised that my $21 payment included a $6 non-refundable reservation fee and a $15 penalty, for a net balance of zero. So I get nothing for canceling, other than the good feeling of helping someone else get a Whitney permit.

Checking Recreation.gov, it's not there yet. (Someone report if/when they see it.)

Steve, thanks for cancelling online. Someone will benefit! Now, didn't you have to pay the $6 just to enter the lottery, and then $15 later when you accepted the slot you won?

I agree it stinks that there is no refund. I think we would see a lot more participation in on-line cancellations if there were a $5 or $10 refund. ...and of course they could then re-sell the reservation for $15. I wonder why they don't jump on that.

I agree if you got a few dollars back for canceling, more people would do it.

I didn't get a permit through the lottery. I just went to recreation.gov three weeks ago, and there were still lots of mid-week dates available, as well as a few weekends. That seemed odd, since I'd heard that basically 100% of the permits are doled out in the pre-season lottery, but I wasn't about to complain. :-)

Checked just now. Nothing for 7/20, but one popped up for 7/16.
