Same thing here as well. I've applied for 2 slots in August and my friend dropped out. I was thinking of going solo if I win the lottery. Let me know if you are still looking.

AJ, welcome to the board. Hope you get your slots in the Lottery. If it is a weekend, it's a long shot. But if you come mid-week, you are sure to get a slot from all the no-shows.
...just like your friend, many people drop out. Their slots become available to those who show up.
Now, if you really want to come out and climb Mt Whitney, just do it. You will meet a lot of others doing the same thing, so you won't be alone.
Be sure to check out the "Orientation Notes" (in the box to the left). They will help you understand anything and everything as you get ready to come and hike.

2-19-14 WED, Clarence, I sent you a PM. I would be interested if I fail to get a spot. Keep in touch.

Thank you Steve. This is exactly the sort of encouragement I needed. Being on the east side of Mississippi I don't get many chances to hike at higher altitudes but I've been practicing about 25 miles/day hikes in TN mountains with 25 lb on my back. So far I'm doing that easily. But MW could be a whole new experience. I'm planning to be there in Lone Pine 2 days before the hike and get myself acclimatized with warm up hikes.
I hope I win the lottery and I hope I could do it. Thanks again for your kind words.
AJ

Clarence, I won the permit for 23rd July. Did you get one too? In fact I've 6 slots (5 dropped out except me) for that day. If you want to join me that'd be awesome. I've done some hiking in TN "hills", we call them mountains too. Let me know if you are interested. You can PM me so we can share contact details.

Abhijit: What kind of permit did you get? Is it for one or two day camping or just one day up and down? I will be finishing my HST (High Sierra trail) by 21st or at most by 22nd starting from Crescent meadows and ending in Whitney Portal. I would like to do the MW from east side preferably with one or two day camping option. If yours is one or two day camping permit I am interested. Please give some more details. Thanks!

Thanks! 20 miles up and down MW in one day would be quite a challenge for me! One of the most tricky points for you could be acclimatization. My recommendation is come 2 or 3 days early and camp at Cottonwood CG which is at 10000 ft and do some day hikes to the Cottonwood lakes and get used to the Sierras.
I am also a flat lander like you and always plan to acclimatize before my hikes. For my July 15th hike, I will spend July 14 in Giant forest area (around 7000ft) and start my hike on 15th from Crescent meadows and acclimatize on the way as I wont be reaching MW till July 21. This time planning to sleep in the Smithsonian hut on the last night.
Good Luck!

Krishna, I definitely recommend that. If the weather is pleasant, there are nice spots outside to sleep too -- under the stars. There is no place else is like it.

Yes, this time I exchanged my old Osprey ether back pack (4.5 lbs) to the new Osprey exos (2.5 lbs) and my pack weight without food and water went down to less than 18 lbs. The only draw back - no day pack! So planning to take the backpack to the summit. So as well sleep there! Last August I did see two sheltered (some one built rock fortresses all around sites north of the hut. So either there or inside the hut if there is still room. Last year I saw two fellows snoring inside! I am planning on taking 1.5ltrs water for my dinner and bkfst. Did I miss something? Thanks Steve!

I'd start out with at least 2 liters, three would be better. You will drink one just getting to the summit.
When I did it, I carried quart zip lock freezer bags on the trip, and used them to haul water to the summit. They work pretty well! I didn't need to carry that much water anywhere else on the HST hike.

Krishna: Steve is right: take 3 litres. You can dehydrate much faster at that elevation, and providing for dinner and breakfast will not be enough. 3 liters is the usual recommendation for a summit from Trail Camp or Guitar with a quick descent: overnight will require at least that much.
Wherever you go, there you are. SPOTMe!

Salty, Steve: Thanks for the advice. My hydration cum gravity filter pack can hold upto 3 liters, plus I always carry 1/2 liter powerade mix and special to MW this time I will carry a small water bottle which I intend to empty on the summit, fill it with air and seal it with duck tape as a gift to my cousin in SF. Of course it will become a 2-d water bottle when I take it to SF Salty! When is your permit for HST? I am following Kathy Morey's suggested 7 day plan starting on July 15th from Crescent Meadows. I am sorry I think we hijacked this thread
