Hey Steve,

Interesting...we did do the HD/RC combo a few years back in 2009 in a long day from happy Isles and was great! Saw two bears and zero people from HD to CR and had the summit to ourselves. I'd have to investigate that shortcut - how much mileage did it save?

Bryan,

Just finished up half dome on Tuesday this week. I can report back that the JMT section was open and clear. We hiked down that way on the way down.

Like others have stated, there were plenty of others on the trail. You will not be alone for very long. If she can make it to the top of Nevada falls, it's a mile or so of flat easy terrain. She can then hang out near the Merced river by the backpackers camp where there are bathrooms and other hikers. Heck, the top of Nevada falls has some of the most scenic resting spots on the trail. I wouldn't mind hanging around that area for half the day.

Have fun!

Cody

Well, just got back. We made it to the top of Nevada Falls. I decided to stay with her and err on the side of safety and go with her back to camp. We took the JMT down and the mist trail up.

Thanks for all the help and guidance.

Good for you. Perhaps another trip after more experience will take you and your girlfriend to the summit. Enjoy the progress!

Thanks! I have no doubt that I would have made it all the way but I didn't feel comfortable leaving her behind.

I just kept thinking "what if I get back at 8, exhausted, and there is no sign of her anywhere?!"

I made the right choice letting the rest of my group go ahead and me stay back with her.

Half dome will always be there.

The Portal Board is full of horror stories about people being left behind & meeting unpleasant fates (anywhere from ending up at Guitar Lake to meeting untimely ends) You most certainly made the right decision AND you may have nurtured a lifelong hiking buddy.
