I'll be camping at the portal campground this weekend and was wondering how far one can go up the trail towards the E-ledges for a look around without a permit? Will be doing the MWT on 15th if weather holds.

Thanks, will check it out to LBSL for a warm up hike. Have been up the Main trail several times and have been really curious about the MR.
