Everyone who already knows me, knows this: I have a particular disdain of revealing my identity, photo, and most particularly, broadcasting the location of my lone self trekking in some remote location (to a bunch of strangers on a message board.) To me, the caution is obvious, but to others, I am paranoid. You decide.

Here is a quote from the following story of how a solo rower was tracked and attacked by someone following her progress on her Blog:

She said she was sleeping alone in her boat on an isolated stretch of the Upper Peninsula when she was surprised and assaulted by a man who had crept on board. Michigan State Police are still looking for the man, whom they suspect may have tracked her movements through her blog.

Rest of the story Here

I have 2 semantic quibbles:

The boat is an ocean-going row boat, 19 feet long.

The article says the "man". That's not a man. That is an animal.

Kudos on her success in spite of the attack. And I hope they catch the bastard.

Quibble away (I fixed the error) just as long as the message/purpose of posting the article is not lost.

The body betrays and the weather conspires, hopefully, not on the same day.

Actually, there was only one semantic quibble. The "man" quote was just an egregious insult to real men.

I don't think it is paranoid. I do my best to not advertise where my son will be. I wouldn't want my wife to advertise where she is when she is alone and in a remote area.

I guess that I don't worry about myself much, but common sense says that women and children should be a little bit more cautious.

Not paranoid at all, Bee. In fact, that's one reason I don't use the "track" function on my SPOT, and hardly use the device at all anymore. There were apparently people here who found it fascinating to not only watch my movements all weekend, but would then broadcast them.

I don't worry too much about meeting that many psychos when out and about in the backcountry, but then again, you can't ever be too careful.
