My daughter's REI/Komperdell carbon hikin poles lost their tips last summer. Is there any way to replace those or do I need to buy a complete new set? Nothing wrong with the poles otherwise.

Leki sells a replacement pair - you can get them at REI for $13.00.They fit a variety of poles - Leki, BD, Komperdell, Victorinox (WalMart), etc.

If so, put the pole in a vise between a couple of pieces of wood (so you won't mar the poles). Take a pair of pliers, and expand them so they will fit loosely around the pole just above the tips, but not tight enough to actually grip the pole. Then, take a hammer and gently tap both sides of the pliers, and the tip should pop off. Put on a new one, and again - use a block of wood between the tip of the pole and the hammer. The carbide tips are strong, but a bit brittle. You can do the job without a vise, but it requires a bit of dexterity. Pliers around pole (just above the tip) always seem to work regardless.

I've found that you can just hold the pole section with your hand, put pliers on the bad tip, and then twist. It's a taper fit between the pole section and the rubber tip and it separates pretty easily. I usually just tamp the new tip onto the pole section by bouncing the newly placed tip on the ground.

got a vise and vise grips and all that good stuff. As long as it is just a typical snug taper fit, it'll be no problem. The snow cups were a real pain to get off, though, so I was expecting this to be even more difficult

The baskets are a lot harder to get off. Sometimes the whole end comes off while trying to go from large to small baskets.

I surprised to hear you say that since the Komperdells I've seen use two opposing tabs to hold the basket on, and a quarter turn will pop them off. Leki tips use a screw-on type of basket, so you might need to spring for a new set of baskets. If you have to - look at Black Diamonds - they are cheaper/better than Lekis IMO. Kevin

Kevin I sas stupid enough to put the cups on when the poles were new. Took a lot of cursing to "pop them off" again, and I have never put them back on since. Maybe it gets easier as the tips get worn. Doesn't really matter, because I usually hike in late June through July and would rarely need them.
