Lynn-a-roo sent me this: 7-year-old prepares to climb Mount WhitneyBoy goes from the couch to the mountain. By LANDON HALL / THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER Tyler's biggest test is less than two weeks away: On July 24 he and his dad will set out for Lone Pine, in the Inyo National Forest, and head up to base camp at about 8,500 feet. On July 26, before dawn, they'll start their meandering 11-mile one-way walk to the summit, hoping to be back to camp by sundown.

I am hoping his dad will get him up to the Portal, or better, Horseshoe Meadows, sooner than two days before their hike! And I REALLY hope he makes it. That would be a great accomplishment. Here's the thread about Jayne Henly making the climb in 1956 as a ten-year-old.

Rosie Heid, now Rosie Breen(Rosabella), was 7 when she climbed Whitney with her Father and several siblings in 1959. Rumor has it that she will be doing a special Whitney climb in October to celebrate a milestone birthday.

I'll be there that day. I'll have to look out for them.

Really cool story. Thanks for sharing. I bet his dad tires out before he does

I know a girl who climbed Shasta at 8. I'm pretty sure her dad said she climbed Whitney when she was 6. I also know of a kid who completed a 100-mile horse race (in one day) at age 5. It's amazing what little kids can do with the right instruction and encouragement.

Their twin boys were in my class. I believe Rosie was on at least one of our trips with her dad, who was the scoutmaster. Assuming it's the same Rosie Heid.

This is so awesome! I'm gonna have to show this to my seven year old later for some inspiration. Sometimes he needs it because we just don't see too many kids out there. It's always a treat when we see other kids on the trail or see stories like this. He loves to see what other kids are doing out there. It makes the San Gorgonio summit I have planned for him this summer look like childs play.

So does anyone know if he made it to the top?

Today is the day they planned to make the hike. I wouldn't expect any reports until at least this evening.

Thanks for the link to the Register. Way to go Tyler! I fear what's next on his list for his parents sake. Hopefully the Whitney climb will quench his desire for peak bagging at least for this year.

Considering my group of 4 guys -- 19 to 32 -- just about crawled to the summit, what this kid accomplished is pretty amazing. It took him about 18 hours; it took us 20 hours. Puts us to shame! LOL Does this mean we will soon be hearing about a 6 yr old hiking prodigy with Whitney in his/her sights?? Well, I do know a 6 yr old with ADD...at least I think he does.
