Here is a link to a webcast of Dr. Hackett delivering the opening address at the American Thoracic Society's 2011 conference in Denver back in May.

My brother who does TB research at the CDC was attending.

This is only a slideshow with audio. Dr. Hackett doesn't start speaking until slide 3. Remember, he is addressing his peers - other docs and researchers so this may not be your cup of tea. I found it entertaining. ED medication not just for ED.

I've noticed sometimes when you open the link the page will load, but the slideshow will not start. Hitting the refresh button makes it work for me.

There is no audio with slide 13 ?

Thanks for posting this

In one of his writings years ago he famously emphasized that the treatment for severe altitude illness was "descent, descent, descent."

Yes, there are other tricks like diamox, steroids, pulmonary artery vasodilators, Gamow bags and helicopters but when the patient is ill he was emphasizing that it is better to be walking toward the definitive solution and safety.

Harvey, intresting to see the standard of care in developed areas is 36hr. of continuous flow Os without descent. But if at altitude with no supplemental Os, then the only option is old fashioned descent.

How did you like the Mont Blanc photo?

John, I never could get it all to open, and the audio was all staccato. I'll try again. I only could see the last few slides. Love the picture of golden Makalu.

I dug up my copy of Hackett's Mountain Sickness, written in 1978. We know a lot more now. On page 49, treatment of HAPE he states "three rules for treatment :(1) descent, (2) descent, (3) descent!" but of course he also discusses O2, etc.

okay, I had my wife open it on her computer - looked at it all. Incredible talk - he covered a lot of history of the story of altitude illness and research, of which he is a giant.
I really appreciate this being posted.

Yes, I didn't know that altitude illness research started so long ago.
