Thanks to EVERYONE who wished us well on the Mountaineer's Route and the e-ledges, especially the ledges. I KNEW I had to cross them this time and I wanted to do it in a way that my kids would feel comfortable. I partially succeeded. I did get a bit nervous about 3/4 of the way through. Kaleb and Cy went after me, and yes, they were also apprehensive. But everybody did it and it was MUCH easier on the way back. I will do a longer report when I get all the video and pics organized. Needless to say, it was a blast, from rock climbing in Alabama Hills, crossing large water crossings and climbing HUGE Pancakes at the portal..... Joe crossing the e-ledges - first time And I also had my Freak Flags with me the entire time. Check them out in the video.

AWESOME!!!!! Knew you could do it....good to hear everyone made it and returned in one piece. Does this mean you'll be leading Bulldog up there some day???? First documentation of Freak Flags on the E-ledges.

quillansculpture, how was the waterfall before the Ledges? Some recent reports said you had to take your shoes off, and wade through there. Any truth to that? Trying to decide if I need to bring an extra shoe/sandal just for that and the creeks. Oh, and congrats!!!

I haven't been to Angels Landing. Gary sent me some info on them and I looked at images. Really gorgeous and really scary in parts.

Way to go Joe. Looked hairy. So that was just one little section of the E-ledges from other videos and pics I have watched. Is that the only scary spot then?

Rod, Yes, that's really the only scary section. On the way back it was much easier. When approaching the ledges from below, you see the entire Owens Valley and your mind tells you that you are very, very high up. You are high up, I understand about 80 feet and enough to kill you, but the initial view is pretty incredible. On the way back down, you are looking at trees, the Willows and rocks and it doesn't look as high. Again, a mind thing. I gotta tell you though. I will still have trouble going over them again. After the ledges, it's mostly rocks, boulders and small trail up to Upper Boy Scout Lake. That's as far as my kids and I got.
Most of the trail is steep, sometimes very steep. Snow fields were a bit tricky but small. Next time I go up, I'll go back down the Main Trail. I'm not putting my legs under that much strain. My knees and hips want me to take care of them.
Also, ran into Jack and Betsy at the hostel and at the Portal. Jack is going for his 95th or 96th summit today!!!!!! He wants to get 100 done in the next few weeks.

Way to go Joe! It's all about conquering your fears, and you've now done that with the ledges. Proud of ya, buddy! I'm thinking about running up the North Fork with the family next Thursday, so I'm looking forward to talking this over with you before then.
Did you guys take the "skinny ledge" route to the elephant ear? I think I've been told that this ledge is an alternate or short-cut, and not necessarily a mandatory ledge. It's the one that's about 6-8 inches wide. Steve filmed it on his MR trip last year with Tom.
Assuming your knee's OK, two weeks from today we start up the MMWT. Looking forward to it! Did you guys get a chance to check out the trail yesterday?
Again, way to go Joe!

The elephant ear spot is not as narrow as other areas. But it is on the north-side route, where you skip crossing to the south side of the N.F. Lone Pine creek and back again.
The ledge is a little narrower than the worst E.L. spot, but it is clean and easy to walk on.

I also prefer the Elephant Ear (AKA Rockwell Shortcut) variation.

Hm, I see you're from Ohio. Yea, I thought the LeBron thing would be kinda funny. I wish I had challenged him to take his talents to the e-ledges. :-)

Congrats, Joe! It will get easier every time you do it. Well done.
