I was wondering if anyone knows, or might have some insight on the Meysan Lake Trail. I am putting my summit attempt for Mt Whitney on hold until Sept due to my lack of climbing skills in snow.

My son and I hiked up to the Muir Wilderness boundary last year and turned around at that point. I might use that as an alternate hike next weekend. Any other suggestions for good hikes in the Portal area that might be appropriate for a 9 year old? If I am correct, you don't need a permit for the Meysan Lake Trail?

Thanks!

My guess based on being up there last Memorial Day weekend, you might run into snow coverage at about 9,200'. Certainly before you would reach the camping areas around Grass Lake.

If Horseshoe Meadow Road is open, heading up to Cottonwood Lakes via the CL/NAP or South Fork Lakes Trails would be a good alternate. My guess any snow coverage there could be easily avoided without putting yourself at risk.

Thanks for the input. We might even drive up to Mammoth. Looks like the road around the lakes is now open.

There is always a lot more snow in the Mammoth area there is in the southern Sierra. If you are looking the hike, you are better of staying in this generally area.

If I'm not mistaken, the last snow survey had the snow at about 80% of 4/1 normal whereas the southern Sierra was at about 56%.
