Ok, here's the deal -
Friday I retire from the Navy after 26 short years. Not really planning on getting a job yet, but might go to school probably in mid-late August.
I'm 4 hours from the Portal in a car that gets 42+ mpg.
I've taken rookies up Whitney several times safely and I might be able to help you on your quest.
Day hikes preferred, someone who wants slow and safe and isn't interested in beating a time.
So if your buddy bails on you at the last minute - PM me. If you screwed up and got an extra permit - PM me.
If you want a guy to motivate you, give you a little guidance and talk story with all day - PM me.
I'm am not a professional. I'm not licensed, insured, bonded, etc. You want a hiking partner that has some summits under his belt and can hike as slow as you want - PM me.
If you want an actual guide call Kurt - his guys are the best from what I hear.
I wouldn't mind tagging along on a MR trip or two (or 10), but that's not my strong suit. If you're gonna take it slow and easy and you know WTF you're doing on the MR - PM me. I'll tag along.
No HABLA Snowshoes/cramp ons/ice axe. Late June or early July is the earliest I'll consider.
I pay my own way, bring my own gear, buy my own Moose Burgers.
I'll also be all over San J if you want to get some training in. Weekdays are the best.............................DUG

. . . and can hike as slow as you want - PM me. "Slow" and DUG? Isn't that an oxymoron? Congrats on retirement, Doug - 'preciate your years of service! Sounds like a rocking chair and a porch are not in your future. If you're in the Portal area between 7/13 and 25, I'll buy ya a Mooseburger and a beer!

Thanks for the well wishes and all, but I'm not leaving willingly. I'm hitting High Year Tenure which for a Senior Chief is 26 years. I guess if I can't pick up Master Chief by then I need to get out of the way for the young guys behind me.
So who needs a partner?
Oh and I'm not a fast hiker at all. I get big miles in by using the whole day. Did you know there are 24 hours in a day? Sleep, much like food, is over rated. I hike at a pace where I can still talk story and tell lies and I break when I feel like it. I just keep going through the night. I usually start at night.
Again, who needs a partner? Let's lace up and hit the trail.....................................DUG

I'm doing overnight on June 28 and 29 by myself. I'm a first timer. Permits likely to be available since it's early. I'd be interested in teaming up if interested. Have a 2 person tent. Looks like snow could be an issue unless hot June.

I've had great luck in early July................................DUG

Whenever I would pitch ideas like this to The Frog, he would always respond, "That sounds like a mission!" BTW, he was forcibly retired from the Navy, too, and 5 years later and he still has not adjusted.
The body betrays and the weather conspires, hopefully, not on the same day.

[quote=DUG] "Slow" and DUG? Isn't that an oxymoron? BD... DUG actually is pretty good at keeping pace even with short-legged slow pokes like me!

At least not for 5-10 years................................DUG
