I posted this on summitpost and on whitneyportalstore, but I guess I need to post this here. This is a long shot, but I'll go ahead and ask anyway.
I applied for an overnight permit for Whitney and got one (after being rejected the last 2 years). After we applied, our family ended up with an unchangeable scheduling conflict on the days for which we got a Whitney permit (Thurs-Fri, July 28-29). It's a permit for 4 people.
Is there anyone who received an overnight Whitney permit for 4 (or even 2?) who would be interested in swapping dates for the dates I have? I'd prefer to swap with 4 permits, but I might have to settle for only 2.
Yes, I'm sure there are plenty of people who didn't get a permit who would like it, but I'd prefer to swap dates. I would do this officially through the Whitney permit office.
And btw, I realize Whitney permits are non-transferrable. I'm simply wanting to pre-arrange with someone to cancel simultaneously and so each of us could have the other's vacancy.
Thanks in advance. Happy hiking, everyone.

I am still confused how you could swap permits, don't they ask for ID when you pick up your permit?

395guy explained that both people would try to call the permit office at an agreed upon date and time. Then each one could release the reservations, and somehow pick up the other permits released by the other person.
It might work if the permit office had two people answering phones and entering the released info. ...Or it might work if they had a 3-way call where both people called the permit number together.
And I am not sure (but I think they allow) exchanging dates for a reduced fee.
I think it is technically not allowed, but I have heard of one exchange where the permit holder called in and added an alternate leader's name to the reservation. Reservations can be picked up by either leader or the alternate.

I have 2 overnight for June 18-19 that I will swap if possible. I would even be willing to add in a cash contribution.

That would certainly work better, easier, etc, than trying to arrange phone calls with FS personnel, permit holders and actually exchanging permit dates. Everyone who's entered the Whitney Zone or has permit dates is on the FS computer and easy for them to pull up.

I got a good news and bad news dilemma. I was drawn for one overnight permit (for six people) in end of Sept.. I am really stoked. However, a few weeks ago my wife told me she was pregnant with our third child, and after a Dr. visit, her due date is the second week of Oct.. I would really like to go since I got chosen, but can't with my entry date so close to the new baby's due date.
Make a long story short, I am looking to see if someone who has an earlier entry date, say in July or August, would like to swap a minimum of two one-night permits in your party for two one-night permits in my party's entry date in September. I can give you the contact info of the Alternative Person listed on my permit to coordinate.
I figure we can communicate via email and work it out. Please contact me at esoderin@gmail.com if you have interest.

EPS: What... your wife is due mid-October; your permit is for the end of September. I don't see any problem! Let me clarify your one-night permit.... Your reservation is for an entry date, to go on an overnight backpack. It does not require you to exit after one night, even though you may have specified that on your application. Every overnight permit is good for up to 14 consecutive nights.

Steve,
Clarify for me what you're saying about the 14-day time period. Do I have to enter on the designated entry day on my permit?... or can I enter any day for the next 13 days (as long as I exit by the 14th day), such as maybe 3 days after my designated entry date? This might solve my scheduling conflict.
Thanks in advance.

The entry date is the ONLY part that is written in stone. No leeway on that. Some people, though, go in to pick up their permits, and find there are cancellations and no-shows for entering the day they show up (one or two days before their reservation's date), so they opt to release their reservation and start hiking on that particular day. And there are always the no-shows that become available every day of the summer. Read about that process under Wilderness Permit Options (in the Feature Topics above on the left), and see the numbers here: Unused Whitney Permits - 2010

I've got a one day pass for Sunday July 21 for 1 person. Anyone interested in switching dates? I know its a long shot, but I'm hoping someone had last minute 4th of July conflicts come up or something. Happy climbing.
