SEQUOIA NATIONAL FOREST, Calif. (AP) - Authorities are searching for an 11-year-old boy who went missing in Sequoia National Forest.

Sacramento ABC station is reporting that the incident was in Kings Canyon NP, not the NF. 10 Mile Creek. Dad and his kids were descending to the creek to check it out. Dad helped the boy onto rocks near creek, turned away to help someone else, and the boy was gone. Just like that. Clothing found downstream.

Goes without saying that people always tend to forget how dangerous our rivers are. There is a lot of water flowing this time of year. Every year people die and every year people make the same mistakes. It is especially saddening when it is a small child. Prayers for a miracle and further awareness.

Sierragator volunteers with Kern County SAR. In speaking with him a few weeks ago when I was out there for some Death Valley playtime, he told me that a surprisingly large percentage of their SAR deployments are water rescues. I guess many of us, who spend so much time in mountains, tend to forget the dangers that lie lower down the trails.

I've only been in Kings Canyon once, but the ferocity of the stream and river flow astounded me. Easy to see how someone could get swept away in the blink of an eye.

An absolutely horrific way to end a vacation. Thoughts and prayers to the family.

Just goes to show you how fast a trip and life in general can go to hell in the blink of an eye.
