A friend of mine plans to climb Squaretop in the Kaweahs this August and was interested in a trip report. Can anyone help out?
He has read Roper and Secor but would like lst hand TR if available.

Squaretop... I had to go looking to find it.

Here's the Peakbagger.com page.
Here's the GMap4 map of the area:  Squaretop Peak

Here's the same map (embedded):

It is so close to Mt Kaweah -- about 1.3 mile! I've been on Mt Kaweah, but Squaretop looks a bit more difficult.

From a Google search of: squaretop kaweah peak, california:

From A Climber's Guide to the High Sierra (1954), edited by Hervey H. Voge
Quote:
Squaretop (square pinnacle between Red Kaweah and Peak 13,728)

First ascent June 26, 1935, by Jim Smith and Neil M. Ruge. Class 3 to 4 from the west via the col between this pinnacle and the one to the southeast. Climb directly to the col from the lake at the base of the ridge, staying on as solid rock as possible. From the col work up the southeast face on exposed narrow ledges to a broad 100-foot ledge leading to the next series of exposed ledges which bring you to the summit. The rock on this pinnacle is much firmer than that of the Black Kaweah.

Google has the Secor text here. (near bottom of page 115). The thing I noticed was this: "Southeast Ridge. I, 5.7. First ascent August 13, 1981, by Vern Clevenger." Vern is now working as a photographer in Mammoth. (See this post.)

Ernie, it appears there is NO trip report available on the Internet. If your friend goes, it would sure be great if he'd post a trip report -- here on WhitneyZone would be a fine place.

Thanks Steve. I'll ask my friend to post a TR after the August trip to climb Squaretop.

Ernie, if this peak is so obscure, how did your friend land on it as a climbing goal?

I climbed Black Kaweah in 1958. He climbed it in 2004 and found my name in the summit Register. Both of us went to Stanford & he contacted me. We have since climbed Mt Stanford (South) in 2007 and Bob Rockwell, also a Stanford grad, guided us up the Whitney Mt Route in 2008. He plans to climb Red Kaweah and Squaretop in August as he got interested in the entire Kaweah range. End of story !
