I would keep my eye open for a Garmin 60CSx. Garmin is replacing it with the 62 series, so prices are dropping on the 60's. Just make sure you get the "x" version. The 60CS and the 60CSx use different electronics and are not comparable.

There are quite a few Garmin 60CSx receivers available on ebay, for about $230.

I saw those Steve, and Amazon has them for similar. Lately I've found Amazon's price typically better than eBay, and a helluva lot less risky.

love my 60csx - never expected I'd still be using it 5 years after I bought it. No intention to replace. It has thousands of miles on my motorcycle and hiking use, as well as in-car basic navigation use on it and never missed a beat.

I'm happy enough with my Garmin Fortrex 101 new from DrivenGPS for $80. Pretty old technology. Uses a COM1 serial cable (bought separately for $15 from The GPS Store) to connect to your computer! No maps - just coordinates with ability to upload waypoints and routes with opensource free software. Lightweight. Lots of people probably want to upgrade to newer technology, so you might be able to find them used for cheap.

I have a Garmin Etrex Vista with Mapsource CDs for the United States that I would like to sell. Let me know if you are interested. It is in great shape, used VERY little.

I'll weigh in and echo the recommendation for the 60CSX. I've been using & testing a bunch of GPS units lately. Advantages of the CSX:
standard mini usb cable to computer. That's a huge advantage. Don't get anything that doesn't have a usb connection.
AA batteries. Unit is good at not using a lot of power. Can go for days in tracking mode @30 second intervals. New color screens are cool, but they drain the batteries (CSX still has color, just not as bright).
You can use their download & mapping software, but you can also use the free DNR Garmin that will convert to GPX, SHP,KML, TXT (Excel), & DBF
The interface seems pretty easy to use. Satellites lock in quickly after the first use. Durable construction; external antenna if you need it.

Nope, sorry, it's not the HCX. It's just a straight etrex Vista. But the price is reasonable. Make me and offer!

It is version 3.02, with a copyright date of 1999-2002. It was purchased in June of 2006 from Amazon.

I have a GPS that can download topo maps and I don't have a clue how to use it. I thought I was getting a handle on using it when I was in Yellowstone a couple of years ago; however, I found once I was in a tree convered area it didn't work very well. I haven't touched it since. I'm not even sure where it is right now. I know it cost a cool $300.00+.
