It sounds like balsss actually did the south rim down and back, going down one trail and back up the other.

To clarify acronyms, R2R usually means hiking down from the North Rim, crossing the Colorado River, then hiking up to the South Rim. Or the opposite.

R2R2R means TWO complete crossings -- hike from South Rim across to the North Rim, and then turn around and hike all the way back. A lot of ultra-runners have this on their bucket-list. So much so that the Grand Canyon N.P. has rules to prevent large groups of runners from doing this as a group.
