Hiking the MMWT alone is safe, provided you leave an itinerary (start and expected finish). There have been incidences where someone started the hike and wound up missing or hurt.
I am sure there will be other hikers who are willing to hike with you on August 8. You might find hiker(s) who go at your pace.
You will definitely make new friends on the trail.
