If he somehow managed to miss Bench Lake he could have continued downhill to the South Fork Kings, and followed the trail to the JMT. Trail Crews usually set up off the JMT, and could have been up the South Fork. Doesn't explain why it took him 30 hours, though. Arrow Peak itself isn't 5 miles from the JMT, and bench is 1.5.
