Lzpup: good luck with your trip. I've posted some photos from last week. See the topic "
Whitney MR, March 1-4".
It's been a very dry winter so far, but conditions could change by the time you get there. There's a chance of snow every day from Monday through Saturday next week.
I've hiked from Whitney Portal to Lower Boy Scout Lake (LBSL) four times (March 2006, April 2006, March 2010, March 2012), and used snowshoes every time. Above LBSL, usually at some point you'll be switching from snowshoes to crampons.
A few days ago, it was pretty dry above the Notch. Our group kept our crampons on briefly to climb a sloping ledge covered with snow, but then took them off and scrambled over Class 3 terrain the rest of the way. Conditions will probably change next week, as the winter storms pass through.
You might consider bringing a 30-meter rope for the descent back to the Notch. We brought one, but didn't use it. About 25 or 30 vertical feet above the Notch, there's some webbing tied around a large sturdy boulder. Somebody left a rap ring around the webbing, which could be used if you decide to rappel down to the Notch.
