I, too, have a "stay within the lines" 87-year-old mother, whose worrying "organ" kicks into overdrive at the drop of a hat, and who, each time I announce I'm going to do Whitney, replies with worried incredulity, "not again..!" It's been my experience that people who want to worry will find a way to worry no matter what you do. Keeping your hiking plans confined to your wife sounds like a reasonable plan going forward, under the circumstances.
