Yep, that's the Whitney Portal road...of what's left of it. Lots of deep now above that point. Road opening date to be determined.

Rocks are large enough (VW to truck size) to require explosives and heavy equipment to clear them. The road bed has probably been damaged. This occurred at about the 7,800 foot elevation.

When the snow and ice start to melt the rock pile could become very unstable.

It's going to take a bit of specially licensed fireworks placed into a few specially drilled holes to break those rocks into sizes they can handle. Would love to see the fireworks go off!

The WPNRT is on the other side of the canyon.

They will probably drill the holes, insert the dynamite and blasting caps, and cover it with heavy mats made of old shredded tires...and then...

Fire in the hole, fire in the hole, fire in the hole...

They will then bring in the big buckets and push it off to the side or haul it away.

Am planning on doing Whitney the last part of May. Am hoping the road is open to the Portal by then. If not- I guess an extra early start will be in order...

Well, the Wild Wild West Marathon is May 6 and the 50 miler takes the runners up to the Portal and back down via the National Scenic Trail.

Doug of the Portal Store normally handles the Aid station there, so I am thinking, maybe optimistically, the road will be open. If not....well then.

Maybe the runners only problem will be snow along the trail.
