Hey gang, Anyone have good beta on the approximate mileages / elevations on the MR? Here's what I've come up with so far: Portal (8,333') to EB Ledges (9,646'): 2.9 EB Ledges to LBSL (10,302'): 1.0 LBSL to UBSL (11,286'): 1.1 UBSL to Iceberg (12,598'): 1.5 Iceberg to Notch (14,107'): 1.2 Notch to Summit (14,495'): 0.3TOTAL: ~8.0 miles with 6,200ft of gainLet me know if anything looks off.  N.

Portal to E-Ledges look off. I've tracked the length and gains with a very accurate Garmin GPS before and can't find the file, but I remember the mileage was between 5-6 miles. There is absolutely no way the MR is 8 miles.

There is absolutely no way the MR is 8 miles. If its 5-6 to EL, that would put it at 10.4 -11.4 to the summit, the same as the trail. Can that be right? BTW, a little terminology. It is becoming common to refer to the whole North Fork route and the route above Iceberg Lake as the Mountaineer's Route, but that is not accurate. The Mountaineer's Route is the climber's route from above Iceberg Lake to the summit;, just as there are North Face, North Buttress etc climbing routes frpm roughly the same area. The approach to all these routes is up the North Fork of Lone Pine Creek. I know, I am so old school and pendantic, but all of the history, as well as the Inyo NF termnology, are on my side. As Yogi said, you could look it up. So there.

No, 5-6 miles for the entire trip from the parking lot to the summit. No one's arguing or looking to argue about the terminology. Although I haven't heard of an established route up there called the North Buttress. There are the East Face and East Buttress trade climbing routes though...

If we are going to be pedantic, we should probably spell pedantic correctly. We should also put the apostrophe in the correct place. “Mountaineer’s Route” is a route belonging to only one mountaineer. “Mountaineers’ Route” is a route belonging to all of us.

You guys are funny. I like pednatic.  It's about a mile to the North Fork split from the main trail, maybe half a mile from there to the E. Ledges. But nobody is going to measure it.

Didn't think I would ever be out-pednanted, but leave it to this group. SO of course I did an extensive search on the name of the route in question, and the one spelling that does not come up is "Mountaineers'". Mountaineer's, Mountaineers, Mountaineering, sometimes not even capitalized, but I did not find one more instance of "Mountaineers'". Although I agree with the logic of what each means, it leads to a different conclusion. It really is in fact the route of one Mountaineer: the Mountaineer himself, John Muir, who established it.

At the top some do - Muir went up the walk-off route, not the final 400. But at the bottom, nobody starts like Muir did from Independence.
