Mt Whitney Zone Forums General Discussion Current condition of Whitney Portal Rd?

Hi, looking for up-to-date info on Whitney Portal Road. How much snow/ice? Is it accessible by a good high-clearance 4WD vehicle right now? Chains required or no?

With the road construction starting down on the lower level, I read somewhere that they had cleared all the winter debris off the road early this year. And I have seen pictures from hikers posting where they parked at the trail head.

On March 24, 2016 we could drive all the way up no chains & back down on the 25th.
