Unused Whitney Permits for 2015

This table shows the number of permits remaining for both overnight hikes and day hikes on the Main Mount Whitney Trail.  (and day hikes on the non-trail Mountaineers Route.)  During the summer hiking season, you can see what is currently available at the online permit website, Recreation.gov.

Check Recreation.gov for remaining permits (A=Avilable, R=all reserved).  If someone cancels a permit more than two days before, it will show up as Available on the start date of the permit returned. Here are the links for the available slots. Click "Update Availability" to see the 2-week display of available permits:
Mt Whitney Trail Day Use availability         Mt Whitney Trail Overnight availability

If someone with a reserved permit becomes a no-show (they don't show up and don't phone in before the deadline, which is noon the day before for day hikes, and 10 AM on the entry date for overnight permits), then their permit becomes available to people walking into the Visitor Center and asking. The no-shows become available at 2 PM, the day before for day hikes, and 11 AM current day for overnighters).

The Unused columns below show the number of permits left over after all permit activity has completed for that date.  It is the difference between the permit quota and the count of permits issued for the day, and includes the cancelled and no-show permits that were not re-issued to walk-in people.

Thanks Steve - do you have any similar data on unused Whitney Exit Permits?

Britonwhit: Trail Crest exit permits are a "bird of different feather", as they are outside the lottery, become available for reserving 6 months before the hike(exit) date, and 40% (10 permits daily) are held back for walk-in requests.

With you coming from so far, I would assume you need to decide early on your hike dates, so you might be able to be a first to reserve on the 6-month timeline. I am not sure what hour each day they come available, but it should be something like 7 AM Pacific Standard time.

Now, that being written, can you give a month you would like to know about? I might be more successful getting numbers for a single month when I ask for them.

Hi Steve,
Yes, I've been successful in the past by hitting the servers at (I think) 8am PST 6months before but its knife-edge stuff; last year I doubled up with a friend, we both tried for both of us and only one of the applications worked. Typically when I did trial runs last yr the permits were there and gone within a couple of screen refreshes (i.e. 1-2secs).

I'm looking at August. My fallback position is that since we'll be looking at an 8-day hike, we should be ok to get a walkin so far ahead of the exit date, but would still be nice to know if there's reliably a few spare exit permits.

Thanks.

Thanks Steve, I appreciate that, its really helpful.

Interesting that the permits are pretty much all used on the weekends and Mondays. Fortunately I'm shooting for a Weds exit so its quite reassuring from that perspective.

Inyo N.F. staff sends it to me at the end of each summer.

They have explained it is a goal in seeing that the most possible people can visit Mt. Whitney without exceeding the quotas.

It is pretty cool to see how helpful they are! I wonder why they then just don't publish it on the web...

Thanks for this! I'm curious: if an overnighter snags a MWMT weekday permit at 11am for same day of entry, that's a pretty quick turnaround to drive up to the portal, hit the trail, then hump it up to outpost camp (or preferably Trail Camp) to set up camp before dark, make dinner, hydrate etc. Am I reading this right?

Doable I suppose--I summited with my two older kids last August and hope to make a return trip someday--but at 60 years old and carrying a full pack (plus an added 40 lbs of body weight I would pledge to lose before the next trip!) I'm moving slower than I would like....

Yes, a later same-day entry is doable, but I sure wouldn't try to haul everything to Trail Camp. Outpost certainly puts the peak within reach for a day hiker.

Do understand, you might also be able to pick up overnight permits starting NEXT day, too, from any that reservation-holders release when they pick up their permit. (groups are always losing a member or two.) Those become available as soon as the official permit is issued to that group.
