This quote from Oprah.com (link)
Quote:
At 26 Cheryl Strayed was, by her own admission, a total mess. Her beloved mother had just died; she'd broken up her young marriage; she was dating a junkie and was well on her way to becoming one herself. But Strayed—who adopted that name because it fit her behavior so well—righted herself by setting out on an 1,100-mile hike up the Pacific Crest Trail, from the Mojave Desert to northernmost Oregon. How she did it, and what she learned about life, love, and survival of the emotional and physical sort, is the subject of her moving memoir, Wild, (Knopf). O's Sara Nelson talked to Strayed about her book and her soul-saving adventure.

Wikipedia: Cheryl Strayed

Reese Witherspoon plays Strayed in "Wild", opens Dec. 5. ...Just might be worth watching.

I am looking forward to this movie, well at least to see Reese. However, as with most pictures that I have seen, this one will be interesting from the perspective of how well they adhere to technical stuff. Watching Reese lift a pack filled with newspapers, or incorrect equipment....should be interesting.

Withouterspoon! Only the best from Wagga! cool

Paul dug up some more on Reese and the movie:

From UK Daily Mail:
"Reese Witherspoon goes into the Wild as she sports muddy backpack on location in Oregon for new film"
(Lots of text to go along with the pics).

A good quote from this article on Vulture.com:

Quote:
Was Wild an arduous shoot?
By far, this is the hardest movie I’ve ever made in my life. I didn’t hike a thousand miles, of course, but it was a different kind of physical rigor. I’d run up a hill with a 45-pound backpack on, and they’d say, “Wait, that backpack doesn’t look heavy enough. Put this 65-pound backpack on and run up the hill nine or ten times.” We literally didn’t stop shooting in those remote locations — we wouldn’t break for lunch, we’d just eat snacks. No bathroom breaks. It was crazy, but it was so wonderful. It was complete immersion, and I’ve never felt closer to a crew. We literally pulled each other up the mountains and carried each others’ equipment.

SO, it doesn't seem like Paul is going to get a chance at a shot with an underweighted pack. As for wrong equipment, not sure what that even means in this context: Strayed started out with a hatchet, for example. How much more wrong can it get? From the shots above, the rig looks right on to me. Its just too bad that she missed the entire High Sierra: no location recognition for me.

A little perspective on what the film is, and is not, about. Strayed on why she waited so long to write the book:

"The point of Wild is not, “I did something nobody’s ever done before.” A lot of people have hiked a long way, longer than me, better than me, braver than me, everything more than me. Wild does not hinge on: I did this big thing. What it does hinge on is the consciousness I brought to bear on this big thing. What do I have to say about this experience? So first of all, I needed to have some perspective. I needed the passage of years so I could understand myself in my twenties. When I was in my twenties, I was too close to the experience. As I grew up I could see what I’d passed through and how it was made manifest in my life."

Saltydog, you may be right. Anyway, I was already set to see the movie today until I found out via searching for theatres nearby that the movie, currently is in limited release, and the nearest theatre is 30 miles away. I wonder when full release is planned, if at all?

One article mentioned that she wore "Danner" boots....seems heavy.

There are movies out already with the "I did this big thing" theme, so it's refreshing that this is not another. I think the trailer clips I've seen point that out fairly well.

But watching the clips, I still get the feeling it isn't quite real: Her pack is huge, but it just isn't that heavy, not the way she handles it. And another, the Kennedy Meadows trailer: Coming off the trail, she AND her gear just look way too clean.

But I still want to see the movie. It sounds like a good story, set in a hiking environment. Hope it shows in my area.

I was hoping to see this movie this weekend but it's not playing in Orange County, only in Hollywood, Santa Monica and Los Angeles. Generally movies like Wild will play in Orange County at the theater across the street from U.C. Irvine.

Ditto....I had my Friday all planned out and ran into the same situation.... Limited release (I live in Santa Clarita and the movie was showing in Hollywood, Santa Monica, etc. a 30 mile drive).

Just saw it San Raphael. It ended to audience applause. Definitely more of a character study than a trail adventure, but there are some nice touches of trail culture: trail angel at Kennedy, Cheryl getting her trail name, bounce box goodies.

Some weak technical points, pack too light, everything about her way too fresh n'clean, especially after the Mojave crossing, navigating with compass and no map, but nothing that really gets in the way. Some very strong ones too: losing toenails, clunky 90s water filter, vintage gear in general.

Good analysis Saltydog!!!!! I always enjoy evaluating movie accuracies, and you did well.

From USA Today, ".....There was plenty of excitement among award-friendly Oscar contenders. Reese Witherspoon's starring role in Wild went nuts in its limited opening release. It scored $630,000 in 21 theaters for a hefty per-theater average of $30,000.

Critics loved the film, with 92% giving it a thumbs up (82% for audiences)....."

A friend at Kennedy Meadows goes through her stuff, throws out ...deoderant, binoculars, saw, camera, stack of condoms...
