Yosemite National Park Proposes Entrance Fee and Campground Fee IncreaseYosemite National Park is proposing to increase entrance fees into the park. The single vehicle entrance fee would change from $20 to $30 for a seven day pass. The park's annual pass would increase from $40 to $60. .... Yet amazingly old geezers like me get in free, after the one-time $10. Best bargain in the country, and I feel guilty using it.

Oh no, do not feel guilty. You have "earned" this privilege. I proudly show my card every time I pass through the gates of Yosemite, knowing that this is one of the few expressions of respect provided to the "Older Generation". The fact that society is losing respect for its elders is evident in too many ways. Let's not contribute to this ongoing decline. Lets "stand tall"! Some lay the blame for this shift in society values to Johannes Gutenberg, since his invention lessened the value of the wisdom carried by the older generation. If true, then Eric Schmidt should now shoulder a larger percent of that blame. We can remedy this situation by burning all books, and then we should picket the Google campus to stop all search function that allows the younger generation to access our secrets  Just joking  John

Do military veterans get this same priviledge? Now that's what I call 'earning' (anyone can get old )

(anyone can get old ) I agree on the military part, but a person has to bee tough and a bit bloody-minded to survive long enough to get old. Speaking from experience. You, dear Bee, have many years to go to bee old.

Before that, they get a 5% discount at Home Depot for life! It would be nice if military personnel did receive but oh well. Being a veteran, I don't make a big issue out of it. If my civilian employer gave me Veterans' Day off would I take it off? No. Steve, I get 10% off my purchases from Lowe's AND Home Depot! With all of my house renovations, 10% can buy more supplies! Plus Columbia clothing stores....I could go on.

+@ti2d: thanks for correcting my 5% and the store. That's what I was thinking about when I wrote it. Over the years, it can really add up. My SIL in the Navy and my daughter are buying a new house and need to put in their yard. Those discounts are going to help.

"America the Beautiful" Pass Active Duty: Free Annual Pass for U.S. Military http://www.store.usgs.gov/pass/military.htmlThe National Parks also offer an "Access Pass" for free that permanently disabled people (which includes disabled Vets) can apply for. Most states offer special passes for some of their Veterans free of charge. California's is called the "Distinguished Veterans Pass", Honorably discharged war veterans who are residents of California with an overall / combined rating at 50% or greater service-connected disability, or were held as prisoners of war by forces hostile to the United States, or recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor are eligible to receive the Distinguished Veteran Pass (formerly Disabled War Veteran/Prisoner of War Pass).
