Mt Whitney Zone Forums General Discussion Permit needed for June 3rd

Hello,

I'm sure I am not the only person in need of a permit...

I have been trying to get a permit for my group for the past couple of years and after some research this year I was savvy enough to retrieve 6 permits on June 3rd. The only problem is I need 2 more permits for the group of 8 that has been planning this trip for so long.

If there is anyone out there with a couple of permits they are unsure about using on this date....please get in touch with me.

I would be willing to pay a premium or offer you a nice gift in exchange for your help!

It would mean the world to me and my family to all be able to climb Whitney together.

Richard, permits cannot be bought and sold. If they could, there would be an outrageous scalper problem.

However, there are pretty easy ways to get an extra permit. But first: Are you looking for overnight or day hike permits?

What are the easy way to get extra permit? Day hike.

Sam- the 'easier way' is not to go on the weekend, have flexibility on the start date, and if one doesn't get either a day or overnight permit online; get a walkup permit at the visitor center. Permits are required for either a day or overnight hike to the summit- regardless of one uses the main trail or the mountaineers route.

Richard, June 3 is a Tuesday. Even though all the permits are reserved, it is so early in the season, half those people won't show up. All you need to do is check in at the Visitor Center (just S of Lone Pine) to pick up your permits the day before your hike (even the morning OF the hike would work this early in the summer). Ask for another permit -- there will be plenty.

Here's how I know: Look at last year's Unused Whitney Permits numbers.

The Wilderness Permit Options (link in the box above left), especially section 6, gives you more info on walk-in permits.

Get your group ready to go! They will have permits.

(...and if your experience is like so many others, when it comes down to the day to go, you will likely have several cancellations, and won't even need to pick up extras.)

Great link on stats. Do you know how much or what % of permit gets released due to lottery confirmation after 4/30?
