Unused Whitney Permits for 2013
Up-to-Date through: November 1, 2013

This table shows the number of permits remaining for both overnight hikes and day hikes on the Main Mount Whitney Trail.  (and day hikes on the non-trail Mountaineers Route.)  During the summer hiking season, you can see what is currently available at the online permit website, Recreation.gov.

Check Recreation.gov for remaining permits (A=Avilable, R=all reserved).  If someone cancels a permit more than two days before, it will show up as Available on the start date of the permit returned. Here are the links for the available slots. Click "Update Availability" to see the 2-week display of available permits:
Mt Whitney Trail Day Use availability         Mt Whitney Trail Overnight availability

If someone with a reserved permit becomes a no-show (they don't show up and don't phone in before the deadline, which is noon the day before for day hikes, and 10 AM on the entry date for overnight permits), then their permit becomes available to people walking into the Visitor Center and asking. The no-shows become available at 11 AM, (the day before for day hikes, and current day for overnighters).

The Unused columns below show the number of permits left over after all permit activity has completed for that date.  It is the difference between the permit quota and the count of permits issued for the day, and includes the cancelled and no-show permits that were not re-issued to walk-in people.

As a party of 4, trying to get walk-in, day-hike permits, is it worth showing up at 8:30am to try to get group-reduction permits or to just show up before 2pm for the lottery?

I was thinking of just showing up at 8:30am and just sitting there all day till I can scrounge up enough permits for everyone. Is this a prudent strategy?

Alv, I would go in at 8:30 and check every 10 or 15 minutes.

By the way, last year, they estimated at 11 AM the number of no-shows, so made them available then. I have not asked what they are doing this year, but I'd guess 11 AM is the best time.

...maybe you could find out when you are there and report back.

I walked in on June 7th (a Friday) looking for a permit for Saturday. It was about 10:45, and there were 3 slots left. At that point in time I was the only one seeking a walk-in permit. The ranger asked me to come back at 11 - just in case - which I did. He jokingly said that if he had issued one at 10:50 then it would be just his luck that 5 people would have walked in at 10:55. So - my WAG is that it may depend upon the day of the week, the weather forecast, the experience of the ranger, the number of slots left, etc as to whether you can get permits for the following day prior to 11. I wanted one before "high" season, so demand would tend to lower, but it was a low-snow year, and it was a Friday.

Thanks for the feedback. I guess i'm going in at 8:30am and hopefully I won't have to wait too long for permits.

We're 6 of us looking for an overnight permit on Sunday Sept 29th . What are the chances that we'd get it? And what options do we have if we don't?
Thanks!
