Does anybody know any good hikes around the Tahoe/Truckee area? I'll be up there this weekend 9/20-9/24 with my family and am looking for some good day hikes.

I'm very familiar with Tahoe day hiking and I did the entire Tahoe Rim Trail this summer. I would be happy to point you in a good direction if I had some idea of what you're looking for. You can post some background info here or send me a PM with level of difficulty (considering the kids or slowest hiker in your family) and where you're staying - north shore or south shore.

Mt. Tallac. Fabulous hike. Great view at the top.

Here is the traditional route (Northeast Ridge): http://www.tahoebackcountry.net/hiking/desolation/tallac.htm

Alternatives are described here.

The Glen Alpine route is very beautiful, though the first mile or so is a bit boring.

Thanks for the reply guys

I will be in the North Shore/Truckee area. It will be just me and one other person. Both good pretty experienced hikers but would like to try to keep it under 15 miles round trip since I have a race to run on Saturday.

Since I live in Reno I know the Nevada side hikes a little better.

Mt. Rose is a pretty cool hike passes a water fall and at 10,776 feet gets some elevation and some pretty cool views, total distance is around 7 miles. Another one that I like is the Tahoe rim trail from the Mount Rose highway. Head towards Mt. Rose from Incline Village (SR 431) and there is a trail head with a building near the meadows before you reach the summit trail head coming from the lake. Once again good views of the lake and a little different foliage than the rest of the area. This one you can make as long or short as you want, just remember the second half is uphill! Both are out and back hikes.

I 2nd the Tallac suggestion. It's about 10 miles round trip. I prefer the Glen Alpine route just because the view of Tahoe doesn't show itself until the very end and it's pretty awesome! You can make a semi loop out of it by taking the shortcut up the ridge from the parking lot and then come down the main trail via Gilmore lake. It's a well trodden trail but not on most maps. Cuts at least a mile off the hike. I wouldn't do it in the afternoon as it would be hot. To find this trail go to the very back of the Glen Alpine parking lot where the pavement ends and there is a dirt road that proceeds around Fallen Leaf lake. Park in the paved parking lot and walk up this road about 100 yards and there is a dip in the road. Look to your left and you will see an obvious trail to your left. This will take you to a v-notch up the ridge. At the top - around 2 miles? - you cross a little creek and the trail continues to Gilmore lake. The better way is to leave the trail here, which will be a right turn, and continue up the shoulder of Tallac which you are basically already on. You'll come across the other trail coming up the front side of Tallac in a mile or so and can follow that up to the summit. In the Spring this is one of my favorite hikes because of the crazy great wildflower displays on the flanks of Tallac. It's pretty dry this year so be sure to carry water as the creeks may be dry.

Weather cools down this weekend with a chance of precip, maybe thunderstorms, nothing bad but be advised. Staying in Truckee with limited time, you'll probably want to visit the region from the NE to SW corners of the lake along the west side. The east side is very dry and isolated with lots of mountain bikers on the trail near the access points. The famous Flume trail in the Northeast corner of the lake is awesome, but somewhat advanced. If you can rent a bike, just about any section of the Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT) on the north west area is great biking. I really like it around Martis Pk. and the Paige Meadows areas. Many other options nearby Truckee also.

As alluded to by others, many Tahoe hikes are famous for wildflowers, but the season for that is passed. These areas are mostly in the south shore and are due to the rich volcanic soils that have not fully eroded. Mt Tallac is an example and it's located in the south western corner of the lake, a long but scenic drive from Truckee. It's set back so you don't get lake views until nearly the top. Great hike to consider for a full day adventure. Climb is about 3,500ft from most trailheads. Lots of online info.

On the western side is Desolation Wilderness, which is mostly exposed granite similar in terrain to the High Sierra, but in the 7,000 - 10,000 ft range. Lots of lakes and great views from peaks and passes. I recommend entering Desolation via the Bayview trail at the back of the Bayview campground above Emerald Bay or the Eagle Lake/Eagle Falls trailhead right off the highway above Emerald Bay. These trailheads are nearby each other and make a good semi-loop. The Bayview climb presents great views that just keep getting better. You'll pass Granite Lake and then merge with the trail coming up from Eagle Lake. You could also come up Eagle Lake. At this point you have many options. I recommend a cross country route mostly south up Maggies Peak for lake views that are better than Tallac because you are much closer to the lake. No real trail, but just keep climbing south. There is another Maggie's Pk nearby and they're both good, but if you do the western peak you're in a better position to keep going. After Maggie' Pk, you can head further back to Dick's lake and Fontanelle Lake, both gorgeous cirque lakes. If you've still got gas in the tank, go for Dick's Pass - another +1,000 ft to incredible views down into the Aloha Lake basin to the south. If you still have energy, go for Dick's Peak. That would be extreme but doable. On the way back you could drop down to Eagle Lake and then loop back up to your car. You might prefer to go up the Eagle Lake trail then back down the Bayview - this would be easier on the knees in that direction - lots of granite steps above Eagle Lake.

Mt Rose is the tallest peak on the north shore. Great hike, waterfall might be dry or low but the peak views are spectacular in all directions. That's around 9 miles RT from the TRT trailhead at the road summit. The drive over Brockway summit is much faster than going through Tahoe City.

Another fantastic hike is a popular trail along the lake from DL Bliss State Park to Emerald Bay. It's a easy/moderate more gradual up and down along and above the shoreline. This might be a good warm up hike before you tackle a bigger adventure. There are some great cliff jumping spots starting about a 1/2 mile in - look for other people or ask around if you're interested. That hike takes you to the back of Emerald Bay to Vikingsholm Castle. Lots of other options around Tahoe, but I rate these all very highly. No chance of disappointment.

Have a great time and enjoy the best of Tahoe!

I too live in Reno and know the area well. I can suggest some hikes near Truckee less difficult than Mt Tallac.Castle Peak, Tinker Knob, Mt Lola. Or if you want a beautiful alpine lake as your destination check out Lower Lola Montez Lake (I was there last week) or Loch Leven (3 beautiful lakes)

If you want a fun time, the Tough Mudder is this weekend at NorthStar at Tahoe... 10-13 miles of military style obstacles!

That's actually what I was there for. The Cabin I stayed in was in Soda Springs so I ended up hiking the PCT to Castle Peak on Friday, did the Tough Mudder Saturday, and went to Long Lake on Sunday. great weekend. Thanks to everyone for the advice!
