Hello Steve,
I made it to the top! I'm in great shape, my only concern was that I have been suffering from a slight calf strain. I did suffer from altitude though, which I'm not sure how much was worsened from incorrectly only filtering 32 ounces of water on 99 switchbacks. I needed at least twice that and it would have been better to have more. Great hike though (besides the altitude issues).

Hey Joe,
I'm planning on staying at Outpost the first night and yes, consultation lake the second night (whenever I say trail camp, I really mean consultation lake). Basically doing my altitude adjustment on the trail.

Can you make it up this weekend? There's a good chance of getting a permit.
Tom

You're on the calendar, Tom.

On Friday the 13th, watch for our friend "Bullet777" Greg from Sydney!

Way to go, James! Yes, a liter of water is about 1/3 the amount you should carry starting up the switchbacks. You need a liter to get to the top of the switchbacks, another to get to the summit, and the third you could hide away at Trail Crest to use on the way down.

Dehydration often does worsen the altitude issues. AMS is no fun!

Very nice guy Tom - Joe and I ran into him two years ago near the Windows. Joe was looking for him and was listening for an Aussie accent from everyone we passed. He finally hit it after 12 plus miles!

Hi, new here!
Boyfriend & I are hiking the HST, starting 8/15. Whitney summit on 8/22 or 8/23.
We're first timers! (Hope y'all will be patient with some semi-amateur questions and advice/tip-seeking I might post here over the next month? blush )
Cheers!
Caplen

Welcome, caplen. Your hike is on the calendar.

And we like(need) "semi-amateur questions" -- you'd be surprised how many people learn from those discussions.

Unfortunately my hiking partner decided that the weather was too threatening to attempt the summit and return hike today. I was ready to go, mentally prepared for a 8 hour return trip, but the predicted rain and thunderstorms put a stop to it. I am not sure how the weather turned out in the end. I know there were lots of clouds hanging around the mountains mid morning, but then I drove to Vegas. I might try for a permit on July 18 or 19 after the Badwater and hope the thunderstorms stay away then.

Hi Bullet,
I started up on the 13th. I only went to outpost, but I did talk to quite a few people who gave me weather reports up top. Basically it sprinkled a few times and that's it. Lots of people made the summit on Friday. Saturday was perfectly clear.

Going to try and get a walk-in permit for either Saturday or Sunday of this coming weekend.

Just passin' through.

Kind of looking forward to a show-down with the cougar. ;)

A group of 5 of us, 4 first-timers, have overnight passes Aug. 7-8. Plan to camp at Outpost Camp, summit the following day then spend another delightful (and hopefully celebratory) night at Outpost. We're in good hands with our group leader: she's summited at least 20 times!

I so appreciate all the great information on this site.

Hi,

3 of us (first timers :) will be day hiking Whitney Tuesday, Aug 7th. We've trained all month with Baldy (2x), Baden-Powell, Jacinto, and San Gorgonio last wknd.

(also we have 2 permits, so there will be an extra that day..)

Enjoying the site!

-Ben
