They were found near Joe Crane Lake. This is just south of Yosemite in the Sierra National Forest Bass Lake ranger district. I've worked in that area as a volunteer ranger. Pretty desolate and remote.
I agree that it is a bit of a disservice to omit relevant details...why report it at all, if one omits the info that makes it a story?
