GPS signal down in the Whitney Portal canyon area is terrible, because of the high mountains and cliffs on both sides. GPS locations require multiple satellites to triangulate your location, but when they are out of the sky view, you won't get a good location. So forget the gpx tracks. You will need to work at reading the locations on the topographic maps.
