I don't recall the dirt road being well-maintained but Mosaic Canyon close to Stovepipe Wells is a cool little hike that I'd recommend.
I agree, if you're going through and will eventually summit Whitney, it's cool to be 282 feet below sea level the same week. Go to Badwater and walk around a bit.
