I also snagged a reserved campsite for my late August dates, so not sure if I'm going to go for that or shift to the earlier date yet and hope one of the walk-in sites is available.
My experience is that there are plenty of walk-in campsites although I've never been there on a week end. Very convenient too: close to parking, bear lockers, garbage, restroom, Portal Store, and trail head.
